Films provide us with an escape from the worries of the mundane world for a few blissful hours. Moviemakers achieve this by the skilful use of performers, sounds, special effects, and sets. Almost from the very beginning of the film industry, these four elements have been essential in the creation of the successful illusions that viewers see on the big screen. Of these four, the construction of sets is the one that utilises the work of tradesmen like carpenters, electricians, painters, and various others.
But how exactly is a film set constructed? What is involved in the process of making something as majestic as an ancient Greek temple or as ordinary as a messy apartment?
The construction of any of these film sets usually begins months or even years before the cameras start rolling. It starts when the production designer reads the film's script so he can determine how much it would cost to create the different sets. Afterwards, the director will meet with the production designer and they would figure out the best way to present the various locations in the movie. A location manager would then be hired and it would be his job to look for interior and exterior spaces that can be used for the film. Once all the details of the plan have been worked out, tradesmen can begin the set construction.
So, the next time that you are at the movie theatre, do not just get blown away by the special effects. Take some time to appreciate the great sets as well.
